Do I Have to Remain Awake During LASIK Surgery?

LASIK in BaltimoreUsing advanced corneal mapping and state-of-the-art laser technology, LASIK surgery generally takes only a few minutes to complete for each eye. Due to this short time frame – in addition to potential risks associated with being “put to sleep” for any type of operation, and the patient’s cooperation being necessary for fixation – general anesthesia is never used during the LASIK procedure.

Instead of general anesthesia, Dr. Jay C. Grochmal will administer anesthetic eyedrops before, during and after the treatment to ensure your eyes remain completely numb and you are comfortable throughout the entire procedure. Though you will be awake, you shouldn’t experience any pain or discomfort throughout surgery. In fact, the majority of patients are pleasantly surprised by how fast the procedure is performed, as well as how well they tolerated being awake.

However, to allay any anxiety and minimize any discomfort, a mild sedative is routinely administered. This makes for a safer surgery and higher patient satisfaction. Our team will do everything in our power to keep you as comfortable as possible throughout the entire time of treatment.
