How Is Glaucoma Treated?

Glaucoma is a relatively common eye condition that can ultimately lead to partial or full vision loss without prompt and proper treatment. As a result, receiving routine glaucoma tests can be vital for identifying initial symptoms and getting help as soon as possible.

While there is no known cure for glaucoma, there are several effective treatment methods that can slow the progression of this common disease and help you preserve your eyesight. For patients suffering from a minor case of glaucoma, Dr. Jay C. Grochmal will often begin treatment with prescription eye drops designed to reduce eye pressure. For more advanced cases, laser procedures such as Selective Laser Trabeculoplasty (SLT) or Endoscopic Cyclophotocoagulation (ECP) can often be performed. SLT is designed to improve fluid drainage by treating the eye’s trabecular meshwork, and ECP is designed to decrease the production of the aqueous fluid that leads to intraocular pressure for individuals who have had or are in need of cataract surgery. In more extreme cases of glaucoma, there are also surgical options available to provide relief, including drainage implants and tube placement surgery.
