How Can Oculoplasty Help My Eye Appearance?

Your eyes can reveal a lot about you, but what if you don’t like how your eyes look? The natural aging process can contribute to sagging skin, puffiness, and droopy eyelids. While eye creams and serums might moisturize your skin, sometimes it’s just not enough.

We know the appearance of your eyes is important, and that’s why the experienced providers at Grochmal Eye Center and Aesthetics offer a variety of oculoplastic surgical procedures. If you’re unhappy with droopy eyelids, puffiness, or bags, here’s what oculoplasty can do for you.

What is oculoplasty?

Oculoplastic surgery — sometimes called just oculoplasty — isn’t just one type of surgery. Oculoplasty refers to several different procedures involving the area around your eyes. This includes your eyelids and eyebrows.

Oculoplasty can be considered a cosmetic procedure, medically necessary, or in many cases, it can be considered both.

How can oculoplasty improve the appearance of my eyes?

Depending on your aesthetic goals, we’ll recommend the appropriate oculoplastic surgery. Each procedure improves the appearance of your eyes differently.

If you have bags around your eyes...

Droopy eyelids (upper and lower) can make you appear older or tired — even if you’re not. Excess skin and fat, in combination with weak muscles, can lead to the development of bags around your eyes.

Blepharoplasty, sometimes called an eye lift, improves the appearance of your eyes by removing this excess skin. With the excess skin removed, you’ll notice a more youthful, refreshed appearance.

If you have drooping eyelids…

Drooping eyelids, known as ptosis, might make you feel self-conscious about your appearance, but it can also impair your vision. During an upper eyelid surgery, any excess skin is trimmed away, which creates a more taut appearance and improves your line of sight.

If you have puffiness…

Sometimes eye puffiness is a one-time issue. For example, a flare-up of seasonal allergies can cause eye itchiness, redness, and puffiness. When your allergies are under control, you’ll likely notice your eyes return to normal. Lack of sleep, dehydration, and too much sodium can also contribute to eye puffiness.

But if your eyes always seem puffy, what then? Lower eyelid surgery can combat puffiness. Like upper eyelid surgery, any excess fat and droopy skin are removed. With your skin pulled tautly, you’ll notice a more youthful appearance sans puffiness.

If you don’t like how your eyelid folds …

Oculoplasty can also improve the appearance of your eyelids. If your eyelids fold in (entropion) or fold outward (ectropion) it can cause discomfort, but oculoplasty can improve the health and look of your eyes.

If your eyebrows droop…

Fallen eyebrows (eyebrow ptosis) occur when the fat and muscle behind your eyebrow drop lower, which might make you appear tired or sad. Oculoplastic procedures can restore the appearance of your eyebrow by lifting your brow to its normal location.

If your eyes are damaged from an injury…

Oculoplasty isn’t purely cosmetic. You might benefit from oculoplasty if you have:

Ocuplasty can also address any tear duct problems too.
