Implantable Contact Lenses (ICLs)

Patients who are looking for an alternative to LASIK and laser vision correction surgery can achieve many of the same benefits with implantable contact lenses (ICLs). Also known as phakic intraocular lenses, these innovative lens implants can correct nearsightedness or farsightedness and reduce your dependence on glasses and contact lenses. In fact, a large percentage of patients who have implantable contact lenses have attained 20/20 vision.

Please contact Grochmal Eye Care for more information on ICLs here at our Baltimore and Ellicott City, MD-area practice.

ICL Candidates

If you are not considered a candidate for LASIK, or if you are searching for alternatives for laser vision correction, implantable contact lenses (ICL) may be the best option for you. ICL candidates are typically those who:

  • Have severe nearsightedness (myopia) or farsightedness (hyperopia) with minimal or no astigmatism
  • Have prescription lenses that are outside of the range for safe and effective laser vision correction surgery
  • Have corneas that are too thin for LASIK
  • Are between 21 and 45 years of age

The ICL Procedure

There are a variety of ICL types that can specifically work to address your needs. Dr. Jay C. Grochmal will meet with you in an initial consultation and help you decide which type of ICL can help you attain your goals. ICL procedures typically begin with anesthetic eye drops being applied to the eyes. You may also be given a mild sedative to ensure you are as comfortable as possible during the procedure. Dr. Grochmal will then make a microscopic incision in the eye and place the implantable contact lens in front of your natural lens and behind the iris. It’s important to note that your natural lens is kept in place, therefore making ICL treatment a completely reversible procedure that preserves your ability to accommodate.

Treatment with implantable contact lenses can be performed on an outpatient basis.

ICL Recovery

Surgery for implantable contact lenses is typically performed one eye at a time, in procedures spaced about one week apart.  We will conduct a follow-up evaluation with you the day after surgery. Dr. Grochmal will provide you with medicinal eye drops and eyeshields to protect your eyes while they heal. You will likely be experiencing improved vision almost immediately after surgery.
